Lateral flow (LF) tests , also known as lateral flow immuno-chromatographic (IC) assays , are simple medical devices intended to detect the presence (or absence) of a specific target indicator in a sample (matrix) without the need for specialized and costly equipment. How do the tests work?
You do the tests conveniently while at home and by yourself without training. All you have to do is follow the instructions in the insert. Generally in lay terms, all LF tests work by you(a)taking a sample, it being urine, blood or another sample type and (b) adding your sample to the test device directly or mixing it with a buffer solution before adding it. The sample then (c) “flows” inside the device and (d) makes contact with bio-active particles inside the device. The bio-particles then (e) reacts if indicators are present in the sample and trigger a color-metric reaction and (f) a positive (yes) or negative (no) test result displays in a window on your test. For specifics on how the test works please read the instructions for each test. You will also find more rich content on the POC*it web pages, going forward explaining these methods.
What type of mistakes can I do?
The most common mistake is not reading the instructions carefully and following the detailed instructions in the inserts. Please make sure you do this. If your test is positive, always consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any actions! POC*it tests give reliable indications and early warning results, but do not give you any directions for which medical treatment or action is best suited for you.
How do I interpret the results?
In general, all LF tests provide you with either a positive result (yes) or a negative result (no).  The positive or negative answers displays as colored lines in a window on your test.  The results come in the following two combinations; (1) a first colored line, called the control line (C), means the test is working properly. This line displays for both positive and negative tests. The second colored line on your testis the test line (T). It shows if the test is either (2.1) positive(the test line is colored) or (2.2) negative (the test line color is absent).  For more information on how to interpret specific tests results please read the instructions for each test.
